smooth is fast

No matter how often I watch this clip I’m still impressed. It’s a sterling example of what “speed” really is. While you cannot deny that Travis is “fast”, it’s the smoothness of his motion that allows this.

  1. Notice that Travis is wearing a speed rig, and keeps the magazines lined around the front of his belt. The gun has a really large magazine well to guide the magazines (custom made?) into the gun.

    But…

He is very fast because of the smoothness of his motions and there is no unneeded movement. He obviously practices this movement a lot. Time is everything in IPSC!

Imagine how important practicing to be smooth is when you are carrying a stock gun with stock magazines on the hip in magazines holders that are designed to have some tension in them. Time might be everything in a gun fight when you need to change magazines or clear a malfunction.

Personally, I think dry fire practice with speed reloads and tactical reloads is as important as actually shooting the weapon. The same goes with practicing clearing various malfunctions.

Smoothness comes from having a strong basic foundation and skill set built on practice and from smoothness comes speed.

    Thanks for sharing the video.

    +1

  3. Watching this made me realize how long it’s been since I practiced these drills. I know what I’ll be doing in front of the tv tonight.
    Thanks for the motivating video,
