SAN ANTONIO – David Benke gave his mother in San Antonio a quick call Tuesday afternoon.
“There’s been a shooting at my school. I’m all right. I just didn’t want you to worry,” Eleanor Benke recalled him saying.
What he didn’t tell his mother is that the incident at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, Colo., could’ve turned deadly and mirrored the horror of the 1999 shootings at nearby Columbine High School where two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher.
It didn’t because he took decisive action.
